Inspired by the tireless work of His Grace Bishop Marcos Theodosi of Kisumu and All Western Kenya, and having been touched by meeting His predecessor, His Grace Bishop Dr. Athanasios Amos Akunda of Blessed Memory, St. John the Merciful Orthodox Project, Inc is a registered private foundation dedicated to promoting and supporting Orthodox Christianity in Kisumu and All Western Kenya. Our charitable work focuses on providing essential resources to support educational programs and services to those in need enhancing their quality of life and spiritual growth.
In the spirit of St. John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, who dedicated his life to serving those in need, the foundation, is committed to providing support for the local residents so they may lead fulfilling and meaningful lives in Christ. We work hand in hand with The Holy Monastery of Panagia Triherousa as The Sisters ensure that all resources are used to provide the most basic needs of food, shelter and education, as they live out to Gospel in their loving stewardship of the community while they work tirelessly for The Glory of God!
In Kenya, schools are responsible for providing lunches to the students. Our Foundation and it's founding board members have been involved in directly supporting The Saint Charalambos School (formerly The Truth Foundation School). By The Grace of God, progress has been made in securing the future of the school. Through the loving generosity of donors, construction of a permanent school building is well underway and the daily operations of the school are no longer in jeopardy as we have been able to provide consistent salaries for the staff, vital nourishment for the students and key infrastructural improvements, such as a potable well, a secure perimeter fence and a main gate at the entrance of the campus. With that being said, the financial needs of the school are on going as monthly expenses are approximately $2000.
Please see videos below.
The Monastery was founded with The Blessing of HB Patriarch of Alexandria Theodoros II and the Blessing of The Late Bishop of Kisumu and All Western Kenya Athanasios, with the spiritual guidance of Gerontas Apostolos from Crete, who has established three other Monasteries on the African continent in Madagascar, South Africa and Tanzania. The Monastery is currently home to a small group of Sisters who, along with Gerontas, and a faithful team of dedicated spiritual lay brothers and sister from Crete, have built the Monastery from nothing. Glory To God! The Sisters provide essential support in every way to His Grace Bishop Marcos, and deliver loving community outreach to all in the area.
The Diocese and The Monastery prioritize investing in the future of children. By sponsoring the school fees of the children of the priests of the Diocese, the widowed presvyteres and the faithful, the children are given the best chance possible to liberate themselves and their families from a legacy of poverty. Furthermore, through this most worthy effort, the local residents are inspired and drawn to the Church as they see The Grace and Love of Christ in action.
The Monastery offers a range of ministries to develop spiritual growth and share the joy of Christ through:
